Perangko Kuno US Trans Mississippi Issue Stamps

Trans-Mississippi Expo Issue Stamps

US Scott 285 Jacques Marquette on the Mississippi United States 1 cent stamp.  It was issued in the year 1898 and is cancelled (postal used) with a numeral 1 circle cancel.  It is the first stamp of the Trans-Mississippi issue.  The centering is nice and appears to be very fine.  Jacques Marquette was a French American Jesuit missionary known for exploring and mapping the Northern part of the Mississippi River Valley (along with Louis Joliet).

Next is a 1898 Scott 286 Farming in the West 2c Stamp.  This copper red 2 cent cent is part of the Trans-Mississippi issue which highlighted a World's Fair that took place in Omaha, Nebraska.  The purpose of that event was to display the how the western part of the US was developed.  The illustration on this stamp is of a group of horses pulling a plow, a historical common practice in agricultural farming.

The following is a 1898 Indian Hunting Buffalo 4 cents Stamp US # 287.  To many Native Americans the buffalo has spiritual relevance, is a symbol of self sacrifice, provided food, clothing and perhaps represented other things not mentioned here.  This used stamp has an interesting oval numerical cancel with what appears to be a state (Ill. for Illinois).

Next is a 1898 Fremont on Rocky Mountains 5 cent stamp Sc # 288.  John Charles Fremont explored a large portion of the West (which are now the Western US states) in the 1840s.  He and his wife's account of their experience got the American public to view the West as a place that could be settled.  This stamp commemorates his placing of the US flag on mountain (which is know known as Fremont's peak) in the year 1842.

Scott 289 Troops Guarding Train US Stamp 8c stamp (used) which is part of 1898 Trans Mississippi issue.  It features US Calvary guarding a train of settlers against Native Americans who viewed the settlers as people encroaching on their lands.  The Trans Mississippi issue of stamps was made with the idea to display the settling of the west and tried to display scenes from both perspectives.  You'll notice this stamp is used with a light cancel, the centering looks to be fine.

Next is a US 290 10 cent stamp Hardships of Emigration from the Trans-Mississippi Expo Issue. this It is used as you'll notice the cancellation on it.  Perhaps not the best looking cancellation but these generally don't.  As far as the centering, it appears to be very good. The theme of this stamp is of a family emigrating to the Western United State in a covered wagon and in this case dealing with problem with one of their horses.
