The 1948 Franklin Half Dollar: A Excellent Numismatic Coin
The world of numismatics—a hobby cherished by history enthusiasts and coin collectors alike—brims with stories that encapsulate the culture and events of their times. Among these stories, the 1948 Franklin Half Dollar holds a distinct place in the annals of American history. As the first of its series, this coin not only symbolizes an important transitional period in US minting but also showcases exceptional craftsmanship that speaks to the artistic talents of the era.
The Franklin Half Dollar was introduced in 1948 by the United States Mint as a replacement for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, which had been in circulation since 1916. This change marked a new chapter in American coinage, coinciding with post-World War II sentiments and the people's desire for a fresh representation of their national identity. With Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration still fresh in memory, it was decided to honor one of the country’s most influential founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin, by featuring his portrait on the obverse side of the coin.
There was over 3 million of them that were minted in Philadelphia and greater than 4 million struck in Denver (D mint mark which can be found on the reverse under United States of America). John Sinnock was the mastermind behind the design (plus also is credited with the Roosevelt dime) though it was initially the director of the mint at the time’s idea. It has the great forefather and genius inventor Benjamin Franklin on the front of the coin. The frontal image of Franklin captures his wisdom and character. The back is adorned with the Liberty Bell and a muscular American Eagle. It is a coin that is 90% silver or .3617 ounces (10.254 grams) of the precious metal in its content and rest of which is copper.
