In this entry we see a 1915 Australia Shilling Coin.  On the front if it has   King George V  of the United Kingdom and British Empire who in this year was badly injured when falling from a horse.  This coin is made of sterling silver and has on its reverse a H mint mark which designates that it was struck in Heaton in London UK.  There were 500,000 of these coins minted in Heaton in the year 1915. Check out the reverse side with Australia’s coat of arms, take a look  below. Our opinion of the grade of this 1915 Australia Shilling Coin is very good. Belgium Paper Money Bill Note Called Franc Or Frank Before Belgium went to using the Euro (starting in 2001- 2002) as its currency it had its own called the Franc.  In fact the Belgian Franc was used from the start of the country in 1832 until 2002.  The following picture is a 2000 Belgian Franc which features Victor Horta on the front of the bill who was a notable architect (so much so that the King named him a Baron).  This bill is adorned with some interesting designs and is quite colorful the back of which has flowers.  There is also a watermark of Horta when examining the bill’s reverse.   The 2000 Franc had a short existence being made starting in the year 1994 and until the late 90s when the Euro started to be used.  This particular bill appears to be extremely fine with minimal folds. The currency of the country Belarus is called the ruble and its 3 letter symbol is BYR.  This type of bank note was first printed in the year 1992 after Belarus broke from the former Soviet Union.  At one time this currency was pegged with Russia’s but a few years ago it decided to change it so it was tied to the US Dollar instead. In the pictures below there is a 1000 Belarusian paper money bill from 1991.  It is in uncirculated condition and has a mixture of colors including blues, pinks as well as light green.  On its back is a print of the Academy of Sciences building which is in Minsk and has been around since 1928.  The frontof this bank note has a geometric shaped pattern surrounding the paper money’s denomination 1000 number.

This post is dedicated to the  Mercury Head Dimes  and here we will talk about information about it, show images and more related to this great coin.  By the way if you didn’t know already it also goes by its other name of Winged Head Dime.  The origin is in the fact that the Barber series was thought to need a replacement and therefore artists competed for this job.  Those that submitted designs include: Victor David Brenner, Charles Barber, Hermon MacNeil and the sculptor who got the job: Adolph Weinman. Artists generally would use models to create the face of Lady Liberty on various coins and generally we know who they are.  Mercury Head Dimes is one where Weinman never said who it was nor did the model herself claim to be it.    The design itself depicts Lady Liberty wearing a winged cap (which for those familiar with Greek Mythology explains how it got its name).  It is actually a Phrygian cap whose origins go back to the time of the Roman Empire and whose meaning is freedo

In this posting we will take a look at a 1941 British Guiana silver 4 pence coin.  This is a rather small coin (see the pictures below) that weights in at 1.88 grams,  has a sterling fineness of .925 and has .0561 ounce of silver in it.  On its obverse or front side is an image of a crowned former King of the British Empire and Emperor of India: George VI.  The reverse side has the denomination of 4 pence in the middle of a crowned wreath as well as the county’s name around the rim.  There were not many of these produced with 180000 struck in total that year.  Our particular coin appears to be in very fine condition. British Guiana became Guyana an independent sovereignty in the year 1966.  Interestingly its currency known as the Guyanese Dollar has been used since the year 1839 and that was even when it was a colony of Great Britain.  Its creation had a lot to due with the transition from Dutch rule to British in the early 1800s.  As far as coins are concerned the groat or 4 pence

Here we will talk about a 20 cents coin from Australia. On the obverse side is a picture of Queen Elizabeth II facing right and wearing a royal tiara. Australia is part of the Commonwealth so this is nog unusual. The reverse or back of this coin is an artistic impression by Stuart Devlin of a duck billed platypus swimming through a body of water. The value is on the back side. This coin is made from copper as well as nickel and possesses a weight of 11.3 grams. There were 106.220 million of them made in 2008 and ours in particular would easily grade uncirculated. See the photograph of our 2008 Australian 20 cents coin below. This post is about a 1930 Dutch Netherlands Guilder Gulden Coin.  On the front we see Queen Wilhelmina who was Queen of the Netherlands for nearly 48 years.  During WWII she was in exile in the United Kingdom as the Germans occupied the Netherlands.  She was featured on Radio Oranje and was an important voice to the Dutch people during the War who did not like being occupied by Germany. In this post we will discuss an 1985 Indonesia 10000 Rupiah Banknote.  On its front side is an image of heroine (female hero) Raden Ayu Kartini who was an important figure and advocate for women’s rights in Indonesia.  She argued that the culture in Java (at the time) did not allow women to develop intellectually as they were often secluded and forced into arranged marriages at young ages.  She wrote about these and other issues.  After she died a foundation in her name was set up by a Dutch family who built several schools in her name.  Later on President Sukarno established a national holiday in her name.  Also on the front of this banknote is a picture of Candi Prambanan Temple.  The back side of this paper money has an image of a female receiving her diploma. Below we’ll have a look at a 1946 Austria stamp.  It celebrates 950 years of Austria (950 Jahre Osterreich) and had a postal value of 30g +70g (Groschen).  This Austrian stamp has a picture of St Ruprecht’s Church which is located in the city of Vienna.  It is a very old church, one of the oldest in Vienna and it was constructed more than 1200 years ago and features very old stained glass windows that are hundreds of year old.  This church is named for Saint Rupert of Salzburg who founded the city of Salzburg Our 1946 Austria stamp below is unused. Here in this posting we are going to talk about a 1988 Mexico 1000 Pesos coin. It is struck in Aluminum as well as Bronze and was produced in the Mexico City mint (MO mint mark).  It has on it’s front side an image of Juana De AsBaje who was a nun and is an important figure that advanced literature and women’s education in early Mexican history (which at the time was part of the Spanish Empire).  The reverse of this coin has a picture of a coat of arms.  There were approximately 229 million of these made in the year 1988. This 1988 Mexican 1000 Pesos appears to be in very fine condition and can be seen in the pictures underneath. Koin seribu Pesos dari negara Meksiko tahun 1988.

Here we’ll have a look at a 1857 Flying Eagle Penny One Cent US Coin.  This was the second year that this the Flying Eagle was produced out of an only 3 year production.  1857 saw 17.45 million of these minted.   This old US penny is 88% copper and 12 percent nickel.  The front or obverse side has an eagle in flight as well as “United States of America” in the legand and the year at the bottom.  The designer of the Flying Eagle Penny is  James Barton Longacre . Here we have a German 10 Million Marks banknote produced in the year of 1923.  This was the year that papiermark (which was the currency of the Weimer Republic was wiped out and replaced with the rentenmark (or stabilization currency).  This note has a date of  August 22, 1923 on it below which one will notice the 2 Reichsbank direktorium seals with eagles.  This banknote note is uniface which was not uncommon for paper money from Germany during this era.  This was likely done as an efficiency measure due to hyperinflation pressures on this currency. The Indonesian Sen was a currency formerly used but was phased out due to inflation.  Now the Rupiah is used solely (100 Sen equals one Rupiah). The smallest bank note that was used in Indonesia in the year 1964 was the Satu Sen (or 1 Sen in English).  It features what appears to be a rice field farmer wearing a bamboo hat (topi bambu in Bahasa Indonesia). The front of the Satu Sen has Bank Indonesia printed on it. The back of it has the number 1 and a geometric design. Series 1964 , (AEK 072406) In Perfect condition like new. Here we have a 1986 Indonesian 5000 Lima Ribu Rupiah currency banknote. On its front or obverse is a picture of Teuku Umar (1854 to 1899) who was leader an Aceh force against Dutch Colonial rule and who today is a Pahlawan Nasional Indonesia (National Indonesian Hero). The reverse or backside of this paper money has a picture of Menara Kudus Mosque which was built in 1549 and is where Sunan Kudus (Islamic Saint of Java) cemetary is located. This building is among the oldest mosques in Indonesia. This 1986 Indonesia 5000 Lima Ribu Rupiah currency banknote is crisp and is in uncirculated condition.
